"Scumbaggary" is really about nature vs. nurture and cooperation vs competition. Cooperation vs. competition can best be explained by zero sum and nonzero sum games in game theory. In game theory, zero-sum describes a situation in which a participant's gain or loss is exactly balanced by the losses or gains of the other participant(s). It is so named because when the total gains of the participants are added up, and the total losses are subtracted, they will sum to zero. Chess and Go are examples of a zero-sum game: it is impossible for both players to win. Zero-sum can be thought of more generally as constant sum where the benefits and losses to all players sum to the same value. Cutting cakes is zero- or constant-sum because taking a larger piece reduces the amount of cake available for others. In contrast, non-zero-sum describes a situation in which the interacting parties' aggregate gains and losses is either less than or more than zero. Natural selection has developed in humans a natural desire to compete. Those with non-competitive natures would have lost their struggle for survival, and disappeared from the gene pool a long time ago. On the other hand, those with an overly intense desire to compete would have become dead heroes, or would be Darwin Award winners at least and likewise would fail to pass on their traits. Thus, a reasonable attraction to competition is both healthy and natural. But the question is why do some of us get on a plane and fly to Haiti, or join the Peace Corps while the vast majority of us are evolutionary scumbaggary? Heres where the nature versus nurture comes to play. Social conditioning can make us more empathetic, mommy might tell you do unto others what you would have done to you, but at the end of the day, we are more like penguins that push each other in the water to test for sharks. However, it is also about kinship and tribes. The penguin is not gonna push his mother in the water. Although mothers and developing fetuses also have competition when the genetic interests of the fetus are not in total alignment with the genetic interests of the mother, but thats another story. The point is, that we help those whome we feel a kinship with. If its people in another country we aren't as likely to feel empathetic whereas if its our neighbor or our own blood we generally want to help. Are we genetically predisposed to be more or less altruistic? Indeed. The 'civilising neurotransmitter' serotonin, the 'hormone of love' oxytocin, and the 'chocolate amphetamine' phenylethylamine are released while performing a random act of kindness. Interestingly, the same is true when observing someone else performing a random act of kindness. Some of us may have certain neuro transmitters or neuropeptides inhibited too much or too little, separating the saints from the shitheads. Happily, in the future it will be possible to mimic, and then magnify out of all recognition, the kind of altruistic devotion to each other that might have arisen if were we all 100% genetically-related clones. Hints of a capacity for universal love can be glimpsed fleetingly today on the empathogen 'hug-drug' MDMA (Ecstasy). But loving each other to bits can also be genetically pre-programmed. It can become innate. For if the right sort of psychochemical cocktail is automatically triggered whenever anybody one knows is present or recollected, then we can combine absolute, unconditional and uninhibited love for each other with a celebration of the diversity of genes and cultures. I tuned in this morning just in time to hear your at times clueless comments on the Stock Market. Overall, in a prosperous economy, it is "normal" for the market to lose points as a "natural" correction to over-inflation or speculation of markets (i.e., housing, energy, etc.). In the 1980's, we had a great economy - with interest, inflation, unemployment, and overall growth rates at optimal levels. However, the stock market lost 518 points in OCT 87 due to over-speculation in technology-based and housing markets. However, it was back to surging within a month. The 1990's were a mirror of the 80's in economic growth trends. Once again, we saw the stock market drop by 538 points in OCT 97. Within 2 weeks, the markets had rebounded. Last year, we saw a similar trend - with a loss of over 500 points in SEP 07. Corrections in a healthy economy occur about every 10 years. Under normal circumstances, the stock market IS NOT THE ONLY comprehensive indicator of economic health. Yet, the current problems are an anomaly, and represent problems deeper than over-speculation or market inflation. In sum, it is THE WORST we have seen in terms of market stability. The war has caused many underlying complications. Contrary to what was said, we will not see these problems go away until the war ends and we stop spending over 37% of our federal budget annually on defense-related expenditures - complicating an already crazy national debt. However, this is another post. Just wanted to add my 2-cents worth to your conversation.

WJFK, I have recently returned from duty in IRAQ,when I left you had the O and A show running. What the hell happened. I get back and was all excited about listening to the morning shows I was accustomed to before my tour. Upon arriving home, a few of my fellow marines broke the bad news to me(no more O/A show (big let down on your part) I thought I would give the show a chance at the objections of the boys in my squad. Tried for two week to no avail. First of all who wants to hear a bunch of dudes sitting and eating snacks on Air, who the f cares about what these fat asses they think of food. The show has no direction, and little appeal. And the characters on the show. Big fat hurting Chad Dukes(can't understand him with that slur, and Drab T-shirt(MR. Monotone, no emotions. Fan of the show, but your movie critic (CPK?) needs to go. There is an old expresion that some folks have a face for radio. He has a voice for newspapers. I understand that your show's style is irreverent and none of you have classic radio voices. But you are all professionals and your voices are inoffensive to the ears. CPK sounds much like Stuttering John when he was on the Howard Stern show. He speaks way too fast, trips over his tongue, and his voice generally has an irritating tone to it. He needs to listen to tapes of his reviews and slow down his delivery. He is so amped up and excited that he comes across as a babbling fool. He also needs to edit his copy--he uses too many words to get his point across. He may understand films and film making, but he is just too annoying to listen to. I know the rest of you use him as a comic foil for the show, but I think his appearances may cost you listeners. I turned off the Spike Lee interview this morning during one of his rambling suck-up questions to Mr. Lee. Love the show. But lose this guy.
